Tuscarawas Learning Center

What is the Tuscarawas Learning Center?
The Tuscarawas Learning Center (TLC) is an after school program funded by a 21st Century CCLC grant.  We utilize a software-based curriculum that customizes the instruction your child receives through an assessment completed the first couple nights of class.  The software will then build a learning path for your child and keep teachers notified about the progress and any additional assistance your child may need to accomplish their goals.  Teachers will monitor their progress through the duration of TLC to determine what areas your child may need additional help.  They will then setup some additional activities utilizing SMART boards, iPads, educational games, activities and a variety of other tools.  Parents will receive periodic reports informing them of the progress made by their child.

Does my student need to be registered before coming to TLC?
Yes.  We typically open registration 2 weeks prior to beginning our after school or summer programming.  Students who have already been in TLC will be allowed to register before the general public.  Because of staffing, we only have about 45 spots available.  We often place additional children on a waiting list and will then notify them once a spot becomes available.

When can my child be dropped off?
If your child has homework, he can be dropped off no earlier than 4:25PM.  If your student does NOT have homework, they can be dropped off at 5:10PM.

When can my child be picked up?
Our sessions run until 7:00PM and we ask that you pick your child up promptly after that.  If you need to pick your student up earlier, please let one of the teachers know.

When does the program run?
Typically, we begin running our after school program around November 1st and conclude for the school year around March 31st.  We also operate a summer program for 4 weeks in July and the first 2 weeks in August.

Does my student need to be signed out by an adult?
Yes.  Students are only to be released to authorized adults and students are never permitted to wait in the parking lot to meet their ride home.  An adult is required to sign out the child at the end of every session.

Will my child receive a snack?
Your student will receive a snack each night that they attend TLC.  We ask for parent volunteers for providing a snack.  You may pick the night/snack that you wish to provide from our sign-up sheet.  Snacks are required to be individually wrapped.  When providing a snack, please provide enough for 30 children.  Please see the sign-up sheet for snack ideas.

What if I no longer want to attend TLC?
TLC typically has a long waiting list each year and we ask that if you no longer wish to receive tutoring that you call and let one of our 21st Century Directors know.  (See below for contact information)

Does TLC have an attendance requirement?
Yes.  We require students to maintain a minimum of 85% attendance in order to stay in the program.  If at any point your child doesn’t meet this requirement a letter will be sent home.

Do I need to call my student off if he/she is unable to attend?
Yes.  We have a voicemail box that is available 24/7 that can be utilized when calling your student off.  You can call the main office (330) 308-9939 and dial extension 8244.

Is the TLC teacher ever available to discuss my child’s progress?
Absolutely!  The TLC teachers arrive at the ESC at 4:15PM.  During this time, you may discuss the progress of your student.  Periodically, we also provide a progress report to you that will show you several pieces of information regarding your child.

Is TLC ever canceled?
During the winter months TLC will be cancelled if the weather gets bad.  We will post our closing information on The Times-Reporter website (www.timesreporter.com) or you may call the office and listen to the greeting.  When our office is closed the greeting will say that we are closed “due to weather conditions”.  If for some reason we have to close late in the afternoon, we will call the primary number listed for the students attending that night as well as post the closure on The Times-Reporter website.
